A Guide to Skin Care Moisturizer Cream – What to Look For and What to Avoid

Before you buy skin care cream, let me tell you about what to look for and what to avoid.

Dermatologists recommend that you use a good skin care moisturizer cream, but they suggest that you avoid petrolatum, preservatives, fragrances and the daily use of sunscreens.

What’s wrong with all of those things?

Some of them cause cancer. Others are toxic to the nervous system. Many of them are known allergens.

Skin care cream that contains petrolatum contributes to excessive dryness. It’s almost like the companies want you to become dependant on the lotion.

Respected dermatologists say that petrolatum and other petroleum derivatives (mineral oil, petroleum jelly and paraffin) cause premature aging of the epidermis. That’s the layer that you see in the mirror every day.

It’s okay to use a little perfume, but not to rub it all over your body. Companies are allowed to list “fragrance or perfume” as an ingredient in skin care moisturizer cream without revealing exactly what chemicals are used to create that scent.

Some of the chemicals that they use are toxic to the nervous system, cause depression, anxiety and other mental disturbances. The nose is a “hot-line” to the brain. Since you can never be sure if the chemicals are safe or not, it’s best to simply avoid products with a fragrance.

It is possible to preserve skin care moisturizer cream and prolong its shelf life without the use of artificial preservatives. Grape seed oil and natural vitamin E are effective preservatives and beneficial to the skin’s health. Honey requires little preservation as long as it is protected from light.

Skin care cream containing grape seed oil, natural vitamin E and honey will moisturize and protect without causing allergic reactions. Most naturally occurring compounds are safe for use on the skin, but a few are hazardous.

You should avoid skin care moisturizer cream that contains “royal jelly”. Some of the “Burt’s Bees” products contain it. While honey is safe and effective, royal jelly can cause severe allergic reactions which can result in permanent scarring or even death from anaphylactic shock.

As I mentioned earlier, you should avoid the daily use of skin care cream that contains sun screening compounds. You have to avoid the organic compound oxybenzone. It excites free radicals in the skin and damages DNA strands. If uncontrolled, free radical activity causes wrinkles and eventually cancerous growths.

The best skin care moisturizer cream counters free radicals, which are produced after exposure to UV radiation from the sun or air pollution. Coenzyme Q10, honey enzymes, natural vitamin E, bioflavonoids from grape seed and other botanicals are very effective antioxidants.

If properly formulated, lotions that contain lots of botanical extracts, honey and antioxidants will counter the signs of aging and may help prevent skin cancer. Don’t rely too heavily on them for sunburn protection. Stay in the shade, and use a zinc oxide sun block if you will be in direct sunlight for a long period of time.

No skin care cream can protect you from everything, but the best ones provide the most protection possible. Be sure you use them for your skin’s health.
